A hand-painted study of the Northern Brown Argus and the common rock rose it depends on, by Lydia Hill, from her Red List of British Butterflies series.
The Northern Brown Argus is classed as vulnerable in Britain. It lays its eggs on common rock rose and on nothing else, so the butterfly only survives where the plant does. Lydia paints the two together for that reason rather than isolating the insect.
The original was painted with natural inks made in her studio. The print is produced on museum-grade hemp paper, hand-signed on the front, with a stamped authenticity label on the back. Hemp grows quickly without heavy irrigation or pesticides, and the inks are water-based and non-toxic.

Lydia Hill took a First-Class BA (Hons) in Textiles at Manchester School of Art and an MA in Textiles at the Royal College of Art in 2025. She works between London and a studio in Shropshire.
